Overview
Shri Thanedar is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Michigan's 13th congressional district, serving since 2023. A businessman and author born in India who immigrated to the U.S. in 1979, Thanedar previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2021 to 2023. He is known for sponsoring legislation on healthcare, labor rights, immigration reform, and mental health.
Career
Thanedar has introduced 17 bills covering topics from mental health care provider retention to ICE reform. In 2025, he filed articles of impeachment against President Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, though both faced party resistance and did not advance. He represents a district drawn after the 2020 Census where his incumbent opponent was redrawn into another district.
Prior political experience
Thanedar was first elected to the U.S. House in 2022, winning the Democratic primary with 28.3% and the general election with 71.1% against Republican nominee Martell Bivings. In 2024, he won renomination in the Democratic primary with 54.9% and won reelection in the general with 68.6% against the same Republican opponent. Prior to House service, he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 2020 with 93.0% in the general election.
