Overview

Stephen F. Lynch is a Democrat representing Massachusetts's 8th congressional district since 2001. Before entering Congress, he worked as an ironworker, became the youngest president of Iron Workers Local 7 at age 30, and earned a law degree from Boston College Law School in 1991. He served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1994) and Senate (1995-2001) before winning a special election to Congress. Lynch is from South Boston and is strongly pro-labor, focusing on bringing manufacturing jobs to his district.

Career

In Congress, Lynch has championed labor issues and consumer financial protection. He supported major Democratic economic initiatives like the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform Act. He has made multiple trips to Iraq and Afghanistan to oversee military reconstruction projects. Lynch ran for U.S. Senate in 2013, losing to Ed Markey in the Democratic primary. In 2025, he generated national attention when he argued with constituents at a rally who demanded he consistently oppose conservative legislation.

Prior political experience

Lynch first ran for Congress in 2001, winning a special election to the 9th district with 39% in the Democratic primary on September 11, 2001, then defeating Republican Jo Ann Sprague 65%-33% in the general election on October 16, 2001. His district was redrawn into the 8th district in 2013. He has been reelected multiple times since. Lynch ran for U.S. Senate in 2013 but lost to Ed Markey in the Democratic primary.
