Overview

Steve Womack is a Republican U.S. Representative from Arkansas's 3rd congressional district, serving since 2011. The district includes Fort Smith, Fayetteville, Springdale, and Rogers, his hometown. Before Congress, Womack served as mayor of Rogers for 12 years. He is considered a moderate Republican and member of the Republican Governance Group. He previously chaired the House Budget Committee (2018-2019) and served as its ranking member (2019-2021).

Career

Womack has been elected to Congress five times since 2010, growing increasingly dominant in his heavily Republican district with margins ranging from 63.7% to 79%. As mayor, he promoted strict immigration enforcement, assigning INS agents to the police department. In Congress, he has championed appropriations legislation, particularly the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill. He has also been involved in agricultural policy, blocking certain USDA enforcement actions through appropriations measures. He signed an Americans for Prosperity pledge against global warming legislation in 2010 and supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.

Prior political experience

Womack was first elected in 2010 with 72% of the vote in the general election, winning the Republican primary with 31% in a seven-candidate field and then defeating state Senator Cecile Bledsoe 52%-48% in a runoff. He has won every subsequent general election by substantial margins: 76% (2012, unopposed for major parties), 79% (2014, Libertarian only), 77% (2016, Libertarian only), 65% (2018, first Democratic challenge as incumbent), 64% (2020), and 63.7% (2022). In 2024, he won the Republican primary with 54%, defeating state senator Clint Penzo.
