Biography
Overview
Suhas Subramanyam is a Democrat serving as the U.S. representative for Virginia's 10th congressional district since 2025. An attorney and former White House technology policy advisor during the Obama administration, he became the first South Asian American elected to the Virginia General Assembly in 2019. He previously served in the Virginia House of Delegates (2020-2024) and Virginia Senate (2024-2025) before being elected to Congress with a 4.6% margin victory over Republican Mike Clancy.
Career
In Virginia office, Subramanyam co-founded the General Assembly's first Asian American and Pacific Islander Caucus in 2021 and co-chairs the Virginia Commonwealth Caucus focused on bipartisanship. In Congress, he introduced the LEASH DOGE Act in February 2025 to increase transparency and oversight of the Department of Government Efficiency, criticizing its actions as unconstitutional. He was endorsed by his predecessor Jennifer Wexton and has positioned himself on committees addressing government efficiency and oversight.
Prior political experience
Subramanyam won his first House election in 2024 with a narrow 4.6% margin victory over Republican Mike Clancy. In Virginia House of Delegates elections, he won his first term in 2019 with 62.0% of the general election vote after winning a competitive primary with 47.0% against three other first-generation American candidates. He won reelection to the House of Delegates in 2021 by double digits. He was elected to the Virginia Senate in 2023 before moving to the U.S. House.
