Biography

Overview

Suzan K. DelBene is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Washington's 1st congressional district, serving since 2012. She is currently the chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and former chair of the New Democrat Coalition. DelBene has a background in business, including work at Microsoft and founding roles at technology and healthcare companies. She holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Washington.

Career

DelBene has served continuously in the U.S. House since 2012, winning re-election in 2014 and beyond. Her legislative priorities focus on modernizing healthcare delivery systems, supporting emerging technologies, and managing international trade. She authored or co-sponsored bills addressing chronic disease management, organ donation expansion, clean competition standards, smart city infrastructure, and tariff reform. She is a vocal supporter of reproductive rights and has served on the Select Committee investigating Planned Parenthood.

Prior political experience

DelBene first ran for Congress in 2010 as the Democratic nominee in Washington's 8th district, narrowly losing to incumbent Republican Dave Reichert. In 2012, she won election in Washington's redrawn 1st district, defeating Republican John Koster in both a special election (60% of the vote) and a regular general election (54% of the vote). She also won re-election in 2014, defeating Republican Pedro Celis with 55% of the vote. She has continued winning re-election to subsequent terms.
