Biography
Overview
Sydney Kamlager-Dove is a Democrat representing California's 37th congressional district in the U.S. House since 2023. Previously, she served in the California State Senate (2021–2023) representing the 30th district, in the California State Assembly (2018–2021), and as a trustee for the Los Angeles Community College District. Born in Chicago in 1972, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Southern California and a Master of Arts in arts management from Carnegie Mellon University.
Career
In the California State Assembly, Kamlager-Dove co-authored SB 188, the CROWN Act (2019), which prohibits employer discrimination based on natural or protective hairstyles. She championed police reform and voting rights restoration for parolees. She sponsored AB 987, legislation to build a new arena for the Los Angeles Clippers, which was signed into law, and AB 1254, which banned trophy hunting of bobcats in California. In Congress, she has sponsored legislation on criminal justice reform, international human rights, arts education, and family support programs.
Prior political experience
Kamlager-Dove was elected to the U.S. House in November 2022 for California's 37th congressional district with 67.67% of the vote in a prior State Senate race in March 2021. She won a special election to the California State Assembly on April 3, 2018, and was appointed to the State Senate's Committee on Revision of the Penal Code in 2020. She replaced Karen Bass in the 37th district, who left to become mayor of Los Angeles.
