Biography

Overview

Tammy Baldwin is a Democratic U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, serving since 2013. She is the first openly LGBTQ person and first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Wisconsin. Baldwin previously served seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from Wisconsin's 2nd district (1999-2013) and three terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly (1993-1999). She holds a law degree and was in private practice before entering politics. Baldwin has been secretary of the Senate Democratic Caucus since 2017 and serves as dean of Wisconsin's congressional delegation.

Career

Baldwin is credited with writing the ACA provision allowing young adults to remain on parents' health insurance until age 26. She has advocated for single-payer healthcare since her time in the state legislature and voted for the Affordable Care Act. She helped pass the Respect for Marriage Act in 2022. Baldwin introduced the Health Security for All Americans Act multiple times. She voted against the Iraq War authorization in 2002 and voted for bipartisan repeal of the Iraq AUMF in 2023. She championed legislation on workplace safety, gun violence prevention, and LGBTQ rights including domestic partnerships and same-sex marriage recognition.

Prior political experience

Baldwin was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2012 with 51.4% of the vote, becoming the first openly gay candidate elected to the U.S. Senate. She won reelection in 2018 with 55.4% of the vote, defeating Republican Leah Vukmir by approximately 11 percentage points. In 2024, Baldwin narrowly defeated Republican nominee Eric Hovde despite Trump winning Wisconsin. She ran unopposed in the 2012 Democratic primary. In her House elections, she won her initial 1998 race with 53%-47%, was reelected in 2000 with 51%-49%, and won subsequent races with margins ranging from 62-69%.
