Biography

Overview

Thomas Massie is a Republican U.S. Representative from Kentucky's 4th congressional district, serving since 2012. An engineer and MIT graduate, Massie previously founded a technology startup and served as judge-executive of Lewis County, Kentucky. He is described as a libertarian Republican backed by the Tea Party movement and has become known for frequently voting against bills and breaking with his party on foreign policy and government spending issues.

Career

Massie has not passed any legislation into law. However, he has shaped debate through notable actions: he forced a House quorum call during COVID-19 pandemic votes (drawing criticism for endangering members), co-led a successful discharge petition with Rep. Ro Khanna in 2025 to release the Epstein files, and frequently introduces bills challenging federal authority (Department of Education abolition, Federal Reserve transparency, surveillance restrictions). He regularly votes alone or in historic minorities against foreign aid, sanctions, and spending bills. He introduced the Surveillance Accountability Act in 2026 to restrict warrantless searches and facial recognition.

Prior political experience

Massie won the Republican primary for Kentucky's 4th district in May 2012 by a double-digit margin and won both a special election and general election on November 6, 2012, by wide margins. He ran two separate elections the same day—one for the remainder of the departing congressman's term and one for a full two-year term. As of 2026, President Trump announced support for a primary challenger against Massie, campaigning for Ed Gallrein in March 2026.
