Biography
Overview
Thomas R. Suozzi is a Democrat representing New York's 3rd congressional district since 2024. He previously served in the U.S. House from 2017 to 2023 before running for governor. Before Congress, he was Nassau County Executive from 2002 to 2009 and Mayor of Glen Cove for eight years. His district is largely suburban, covering northern Nassau County and parts of northeastern Queens.
Career
As Nassau County Executive, Suozzi is credited with resuscitating the county's finances during a fiscal crisis, eliminating deficits, accumulating surpluses, securing 11 bond upgrades, and implementing a "no wrong door" social services program. In Congress, he has authored legislation to restore the SALT deduction cap, though efforts have been unsuccessful. He is co-chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus, seeking bipartisan compromise. He voted for military aid packages for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan in 2024.
Prior political experience
Suozzi was first elected to Congress in 2016, defeating Republican Jack Martins 53% to 47%. He was reelected in 2018 with 59% of the vote over Republican Dan DeBono and in 2020 with 56% against George Santos. In 2024, he won a special election on February 13 with 54% of the vote against Republican Mazi Melesa Pilip, and was subsequently reelected in the November 2024 general election against Republican Mike LiPetri. He previously ran unsuccessfully for New York governor in the 2006 Democratic primary (losing to Eliot Spitzer) and 2022 (placing third).
