Biography
Overview
Tim Sheehy is a Republican U.S. Senator from Montana serving since 2025. Born November 18, 1985, in Ramsey, Minnesota, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2008 and served as a Navy SEAL with tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, South America, and the Pacific. He founded Bridger Aerospace, an aerial firefighting company, in 2014 and sold a portion of the company (Ascent Vision Technologies) for $350 million in 2020. At 39, he is the youngest Republican senator and second-youngest overall. He defeated three-term Democratic incumbent Jon Tester in 2024 with 52.6% of the vote.
Career
Sheehy's primary legislative achievement has been passage of S. 160, the "Aerial Firefighting Enhancement Act of 2025," which he introduced based on his firefighting company experience. The bill allows private companies to purchase former military planes and parts for wildfire response and was signed into law by President Trump on June 12, 2025. He has also introduced bills on wildfire management, including the Fix Our Forests Act (April 2025) co-sponsored with Senators Hickenlooper, Curtis, and Padilla. He cosponsored efforts to eliminate the estate tax and opposed federal solar energy tax credits. He co-sponsored a bill in December 2025 to remove protections from Montana Wilderness Study Areas.
Prior political experience
Sheehy announced his candidacy in June 2023 to challenge three-term Democratic incumbent Jon Tester. He won the 2024 election with 52.6% of the vote. The race was the most expensive in U.S. history on a per-voter basis, with spending estimated at $487 per registered voter, mostly attributed to out-of-state "dark money" groups. Republicans had targeted the Montana seat to gain majority control in the Senate.
