Overview

Tim Walberg is a Republican U.S. Representative from Michigan's 5th congressional district, serving since 2011. First elected to the House in 2006, he previously represented the 7th district from 2007–2009 and 2011–2023. A former Michigan state legislator (1983–1998) and ordained pastor, Walberg is the longest-tenured current member of Michigan's congressional delegation and is expected to become the dean of the delegation when Senator Gary Peters retires in 2027.

Career

Walberg has served in the U.S. House for nearly two decades with increasing electoral success. He defeated incumbent Mark Schauer in 2010 after losing to him in 2008, then won reelection consistently with growing margins—reaching 65.7% in 2024 against Democratic opponent Libbi Urban. As chair of the Education and Workforce Committee, he leads major legislation such as the Stronger Workforce for America Act and the FAFSA Verification Efficiency Act. He has authored legislation on workers' compensation, broadband deployment, and veterans services.

Prior political experience

Walberg was first elected to the U.S. House in 2006, defeating Democrat Sharon Renier 50%–46%. He lost his reelection bid in 2008 to Democrat Mark Schauer (49%–47%) but reclaimed the seat in 2010 (50%–45%). He was subsequently reelected in 2012 (53%–43%), 2014 (54% of vote), 2016 (55%), 2018 (53.8%), 2020 (58.7%), 2022 (62.4% after redistricting to the 5th district), and 2024 (65.7%). He faced no opposition in the 2024 Republican primary.
