Overview

Timothy M. Kennedy is a Democrat representing New York's 26th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. First elected in an April 2024 special election, he previously served in the New York State Senate from 2011 to 2024. Kennedy earned degrees in occupational therapy and worked as a licensed occupational therapist before entering politics. He's known for supporting legislation on transportation, veterans' affairs, public safety, and emergency management.

Career

In the New York State Senate, Kennedy authored Jay-J's Law (2013) increasing penalties for repeat child abusers and Jackie's Law (2014) strengthening stalking statutes. As Transportation Committee chair, he secured $100 million for Buffalo's Metro Rail System and helped establish a new Amtrak station. He supported a 2022 gun safety package following the Buffalo Tops shooting. In Congress, he introduced legislation to ban enhanced body armor and co-sponsored the Nurse Staffing Standards Act.

Prior political experience

Kennedy was first elected to the U.S. House in an April 30, 2024 special election, winning with 68.6% of the vote against Republican Gary Dickson (31.3%). He was sworn in on May 6, 2024. In the New York State Senate, Kennedy won his first election in 2010 with 47% to opponent Jack Quinn III's 45%. He won subsequent state senate races by increasing margins, running unopposed in 2012 and 2016 general elections.
