Overview
Todd Young is a Republican U.S. Senator from Indiana, serving since 2017. An attorney and former Marine Corps officer, Young previously represented Indiana's 9th congressional district in the House. He was first elected to the Senate in 2016, defeating Democrat Evan Bayh with 52% of the vote, and was reelected in 2022 with 58.6% of the vote.
Career
Young co-sponsored the CHIPS and Science Act (2022), a $280 billion bill to promote semiconductor research and compete with China. He introduced bipartisan legislation with Senator Tim Kaine to repeal post-9/11 military force authorizations, which passed in 2023. On January 6, 2021, Young certified the Electoral College count and stated that "when it comes to the law, our opinions don't matter; the law matters." He has sponsored multiple bills addressing housing supply, mental health in schools, and biotechnology coordination.
Prior political experience
Young was first elected to the U.S. House in 2010, defeating incumbent Democrat Baron Hill in Indiana's 9th district. He was reelected to the House in 2012 with 55% and in 2014 with 62%. In 2016, Young won the Republican Senate primary with 67% of votes and defeated Democrat Evan Bayh in the general election with 52% to 42%. He was reelected to the Senate in 2022, defeating Democrat Thomas McDermott Jr. with 58.6% to 37.9%.
