Biography
Overview
Tom Barrett is a Republican U.S. Representative from Michigan's 7th congressional district, serving since January 2025. A retired Army Chief Warrant Officer with 21 years of service including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Barrett previously served in the Michigan House (2015-2019) and Michigan Senate (2019-2023). He represents a seven-county district centered on Lansing.
Career
In his first year in Congress, Barrett voted for the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (May 2025), supporting a major budget and tax bill that passed 215-214. In Michigan's legislature, he was a vocal critic of Governor Whitmer's COVID-19 emergency powers and sponsored legislation to limit the governor's authority. He supports the Trump administration's foreign policy, including strikes on Iran (March 2026).
Prior political experience
Barrett was first elected to the Michigan House in 2014, narrowly defeating Democratic incumbent Theresa Abed. He won re-election in 2016 with 54% of the vote. He was elected to the Michigan Senate in 2018. In his 2022 race for Congress, he lost to Democrat Elissa Slotkin 46%-52% in what became the most expensive congressional race in the nation at that time, with over $36 million spent. He successfully ran again in 2024, defeating Democrat Curtis Hertel Jr. in Michigan's 7th district.
