Biography

Overview

Tommy Tuberville is a Republican U.S. Senator from Alabama, serving since 2021. Before entering politics, he was a college football coach at Auburn University (1999-2008), Ole Miss (1995-1998), Texas Tech (2010-2012), and Cincinnati (2013-2016), winning five national coach-of-the-year awards after Auburn's undefeated 2004 season. He won his 2020 Senate race by defeating Democrat Doug Jones with 60.1% of the vote after winning the Republican primary runoff against Jeff Sessions.

Career

In 2023, Tuberville placed a hold on all military officer promotions for 10 months to protest a Defense Department policy reimbursing travel costs for service members seeking abortions, blocking over 450 promotions. He was among senators who voted to object to certification of the 2020 presidential election. He co-sponsored bills restricting transgender military service and participation in women's sports. He has championed veterans' healthcare bills and authored the Farm Board Act and other agricultural legislation.

Prior political experience

Tuberville was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2020. In the Republican primary on March 3, 2020, he received 33.4% of the vote, ahead of former Senator Jeff Sessions (31.6%), triggering a runoff. On July 14, 2020, Tuberville defeated Sessions 60.7% to 39.3% in the runoff. In the general election on November 3, 2020, he defeated incumbent Democrat Doug Jones with 60.1% of the vote. In May 2025, Tuberville announced he would run for governor of Alabama in 2026 instead of seeking reelection to the Senate.
