Biography
Overview
Val Hoyle is a Democrat serving as U.S. Representative for Oregon's 4th congressional district since 2023. Before entering Congress, she served as Oregon's labor commissioner from 2019 to 2023 and in the Oregon House of Representatives from 2009 to 2017, including as majority leader from 2013 to 2015. She was first elected to Congress in 2022.
Career
In the Oregon House, Hoyle served as majority leader from 2013 to 2015 and worked on health care transformation and elder abuse prevention. As Oregon's labor commissioner, she oversaw enforcement of wage and hour laws and civil rights enforcement. In Congress, she has focused on environmental protection and natural resources, sponsoring bills on wildfire resilience, river protection, clean water initiatives, and worker safety for firefighters with Parkinson's disease.
Prior political experience
Hoyle was first elected to Congress in November 2022, representing Oregon's 4th congressional district. She succeeded fellow Democrat Peter DeFazio, who retired after 18 terms. She benefited from more than $500,000 in spending by super PACs during the primary.
