Biography
Overview
William R. Timmons IV is a Republican U.S. Representative from South Carolina's 4th district, serving since 2019. He previously served as a South Carolina state senator from 2016 to 2018. Born April 30, 1984, Timmons is a former prosecutor who worked for the 13th Circuit solicitor's office focusing on domestic violence and other crimes. He holds degrees from George Washington University, the University of South Carolina, and NYU.
Career
Timmons was elected to replace retiring Rep. Trey Gowdy in 2018 and has been re-elected three times. He cosponsored legislation on constitutional term limits, China's 5G influence in developing nations, and government efficiency. In July 2024, his questioning of former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle during an oversight hearing gained national attention and preceded her resignation. He is a member of the Republican Study Committee.
Prior political experience
Timmons was first elected to Congress in 2018, winning a competitive Republican primary with 19.2% in a 13-candidate field and defeating Lee Bright in the runoff with 54.2%. He won the general election with 59.5% against Democrat Brandon Brown. In 2020, he won renomination unopposed and the general election with 61.6% against Kim Nelson. In 2022, he won renomination with 52.7% in a four-candidate primary and was re-elected unopposed. In 2024, he won renomination 51.6%-48.4% against Adam Morgan (endorsed by conservative House Republicans and former Sen. Jim DeMint) and was re-elected in the general election. He is running for re-election in 2026 and has pledged this will be his last re-election campaign before retiring in 2028.
