Born April 7, 1992, in Seattle to Iranian immigrant parents, she is the youngest female member of Congress and the first Iranian American elected to public office in Arizona. Before joining Congress, she served on the Phoenix City Council from 2021 to 2024, where she was the youngest person elected to that body. Ansari has a background in climate policy and international relations, having worked with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the Paris Agreement and studied at Stanford University and Cambridge University.

Career

As a Phoenix City Council member (2021-2024), Ansari created the Office of Heat Response and Mitigation, which focused on tree-planting, pavement heat reduction, and distributing resources like water to residents. She promoted electric vehicle adoption and advocated for the city to purchase hydrogen fuel cell and battery electric buses. She attended the 2021 and 2022 UN Climate Change Conferences. In Congress, she was elected Democratic freshman class president in November 2024. She boycotted Donald Trump's inauguration to attend a Martin Luther King Jr. Day march in her district. In April 2026, she announced intent to introduce impeachment articles against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Prior political experience

Ansari won election to Phoenix City Council in 2020 as a top-two finisher in the general election, advancing to a runoff held on March 9, 2021, which she won. She took office on April 19, 2021. In 2024, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Arizona's 3rd congressional district, winning the primary by 39 votes and the general election with nearly 71% of the vote in the deep-blue district.
