Biography
Overview
Mike Carey is a Republican U.S. Representative from Ohio's 15th congressional district, first elected in a 2021 special election. A former coal lobbyist and vice president of government affairs for American Consolidated Natural Resources, Carey considers himself an advocate for coal miners and American energy independence. He served in the Army National Guard from 1989 to 1999 and holds degrees from Marion Military Institute and Ohio State University.
Career
Carey was first elected in a 2021 special election with endorsements from then-President Trump and Vice President Pence. In the 2022 midterms, he defeated Democratic union leader Gary Josephson, raising around $2.3 million for that race. He successfully advocated to join the Ways and Means Committee in the 118th Congress and re-launched the House Civility and Respect Caucus with Representative Joyce Beatty. He has been a strong supporter of Trump and was considered a top contender to fill Ohio's U.S. Senate seat vacated by J.D. Vance.
Prior political experience
Carey was first elected in a November 2, 2021 special election to Ohio's 15th congressional district. He won the Republican primary with the most financial contributions among 11 candidates and received endorsements from then-President Trump and Vice President Pence. In the 2022 midterm election, he defeated Democratic nominee Gary Josephson. He won re-election in 2024.
