Biography
Overview
Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a Democratic U.S. representative from Florida's 25th congressional district, first elected to Congress in 2004. She previously served in the Florida House and Senate. From 2011 to 2016, she chaired the Democratic National Committee before resigning following WikiLeaks disclosures. Her district covers much of southern Broward County, including parts of Fort Lauderdale. She is Florida's first female Jewish member of Congress.
Career
Wasserman Schultz has authored or championed legislation on pool safety (Virginia Graeme Baker Act), hate crimes, identity theft prevention, and Jewish American Heritage Month (created in 2008 with bipartisan support). She served as a lead advocate for crime victim rights and the family of Daniel Wultz, a constituent killed in a terrorist attack. She was appointed to the Appropriations Committee in her second term—described as a plum assignment—and rose to Chief Deputy Whip. She voted to impeach President Trump in December 2019.
Prior political experience
Wasserman Schultz was first elected to Congress in 2004 with 70.2% of the vote. She ran unopposed in 2006. In 2008, she defeated Independent and Socialist candidates. In 2010, she won with 60.1% of the vote. After redistricting in 2012, she won with 63.2%. In 2014, she defeated Republican Joe Kaufman with 62.7%. In 2016, after court-ordered redistricting, she won a Democratic primary against Bernie Sanders-endorsed Tim Canova with 57% and defeated Kaufman in the general election with 56.7%. In 2018, she ran unopposed in the primary and won the general with 58.48%. In 2020, she won the Democratic primary against Jen Perelman with 72%.
